Our guest speaker was Danny Brewer, Arkansas State Apiary Inspector.  If you ever have a question, simply text or email him and he'll contact you ASAP.

He has 58 hives located around Arkansas.  He brands his hives inside and on each frame, in case of thief.  He recommends if you have several yards with your bees, to brand your hives.  If you brand on the outside, robbers will simply sand off your info and repaint.  Best to brand inside, more than likely robbers will not look brands inside the hives or on the frames.  You can get little copper ID tags and place on frames.  The bees will build over them, as not to be visible.

There was so much information that he put out - best to watch the video.  Please forgive the constants humming of the refrigerator.   Video can be found at:

·         1/5 swarms caught are European Foul Brood on average.

·         Terra Pro need a vet to treat bees. List of vets located here: Terra-Pro is a medicated feed mix which contains Terramycin™, Bee-Pro®, sucrose and other vitamins and minerals. It is recommended as an aid in the control of American and European Foulbrood. Terra-Pro should be fed early in the spring and fall and should be consumed by the bees before main honey flow begins.

·         American Foul Brood - Kills all hives and have to burn hives.

·         Be sure to do a Fire Ant inspection in your yards, these little creatures love to rob the hives.  Bee inspectors have to inspect for fire ants if the hive is being transported to CA.  Ants are attracted to SPAM.  Inspectors set out SPAM near hives going to CA.  Within 45 minutes ants will come out of a hive and go for the SPAM.

·         Dr. Heidi Ward Ass Prof UofA extension office is training the vets.

·         You have to catch Foul-brood early in order to be able to treat with antibiotic otherwise it is useless to try.

·         One way to prevent EFB from spreading is to keep two bee yards.  One should be where you keep your swarms and quarantine these until you know they are safe from EFB. Keep your other main bee yard separate from your swarm bee yard.

·         Arkansas has three counties next to Louisiana that have Africanized Bees.

·         Looking for Africanized Bees / Swarm Traps

·         Food Grade product in hive only !!

·         Buying bees packets / Nucs must be inspected.

·         He opened it to Q&A, then we socialized for a bit.

A BIG THANK YOU to Glenda Hackney and the Highland School District for allowing us to hold our meetings here.  She said that if we keep growing and need more space, we can use the cafeteria.  She is going to check to see what type of seating there is.

At end of meeting, Vernon presented Certificates of Appreciation to Danny and a Certificate of Recognition and Appreciation to Arrie Goodwin.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:10pm
