Meeting Minutes

Minutes from May 9, 2017 were corrected and approved.

Activity Report:

1)     We lost a member (Stanley Holder) due to a heart attack.  May Martha know that she is in our thoughts and prayers during this time.  Bob and Vernon made a motion to donate $200.00 to help Martha with bereavement and Rick 2nd the motion.  It was passed unanimously.   Jacque will get that in the mail ASAP to her.

2)     Check your hives – now is the time to start putting Supers on top to collect honey.

3)     During Honey Flow – treat mites using organic treatments.

4)     Folks commented that the Beetles are not as bad this year as previous years.

5)     Fairs coming up fast – Need volunteers to help man the booths.   Arrie will be at every one to talk to folks and spread the word, even the static displays ones.  All are welcome to help at booths to be a presence to answer questions.  Last year, was my first time doing the fairs and I (Jacque) just by listening to Bob, Arrie, Vernon and others talk about bees, I learned SOOO much.  We have a lot of material /items to put on display for folks to ask questions about.

Fulton County Fair - There were no more space inside so I got us a one-half outside space w/ electric (12x10) for $95.00.  I also got us an Educational Exhibit table (4x4) to be judged. This is free of charge.  This has to be set up Monday, July 24, 11am - 6pm.  It will be judged Tuesday morning.    I was asked to please tell the FULTON County members to submit their honey on behalf of the Five Rivers Bee Club.  The divisions are Light / Dark Extracted and Light / Dark Comb.  So if you live in Fulton County and wish to enter honey, please let Arrie know.

6)     If anyone knows of schools, church, or events that wish to have us speak about Honey Bees, please let Arrie know.

7)     Ronda made a contract with the USDA Conservation/Grant Assistance Program and has been pleased with the results thus far.  Any questions, do not hesitate to give her a call to discuss.

8)     Arrie did Show-N-Tell on how to assemble a Langstroth Hive Establishment and spoke on virgin queens vs. established queens with regards to Queen Excluders on top and/or bottom.

9)     No one is extracting honey as of yet, which brought us to next order of business – the Honey Extractor.  Jacque passed around a list of possible ones to purchase and it was recommended to buy one a bit cheaper since it is going to be used for the members to check out to use. It something happens, then the club would not be out that much.  She ordered the Little Giant Farm & Ag EXT2SS 2 Frame Stainless Steel Extractor  along with Little Giant Farm & Ag BKT5 Plastic Bucket, 5 gallon and New Honey Strainer Double Sieve Stainless Steel Beekeeping Equipment VIVO Filter (BEE-V101H).  The cost was $153.18 for all.  It has come in and ready for check-out.  If you wish to check the equipment out, here is the Form that needs to be filled out. or let Jacque know and she can email it to you.  The forms will be at the meetings as well.

10) Arrie said since we got a new bee keeper from the candy sticks last year, he wants candy again this year, spent $190.14 on Hard Honey filled candies (29 lbs.) and Honey Stix (1000) again this year for the fairs.

11) Folks chatted in several groups and visited with each other.  During one of the groups, they were talking of the new Arkansas State Bee Inspectors positions had been filled.  I did not get the names.

12) Lending Library is a success, Pat checked out Beekeeping for Dummies this month.

It was a great turn out for the club and we hope to see everyone again next month.  If ever you have any questions, you can email anyone one us or post on our Facebook page.  Remember, our website is www.5rbc.net
